ANTERO VIRTANEN, head organizing committee and REIMO WISKARI, President of Jussinkylä Rotary Club Tampere.

Member countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden dnd now since last year also the 3 Baltic countries: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Each year the Nordic Championship Rotary Golf tournament takes place in a different country. Next year it will be organized by Kungälv Kongahälla Rotary Club in the GC of Gullbringa, Southern Sweden. Head of the organizing committee will be Kenneth Wallbert – In 2013 it will be in Denmark and in 2014 IGFR Lithuania will be the organizer.

Golf courses played this year: Lakeside Golf course and Devil’s field golf course.

The Finnish people are not only very friendly and have nice golf courses imbedded in a beautiful country side surrounded by lakes and forests, but are able to offer early August – at least this year – weather like in the South of Spain – blue sky and temperatures around 30 centigrade every day. The Devil’s field Golf course very much meriting its name was somehow gentle this year, particularly with the players from abroad. Looking for a ball in the forest was more of a pleasure than a problem. It was difficult to find golf balls, but one was compensated with blueberries and raspberries. Finnish market places around this time of the year are full of blueberries and many other berries of all colours and tastes and, of course, with tons of the “chanterelle”- mushrooms beautifully exhibited on large tables.

The Finnish organizing committee headed by Antero Virtanen and Antero Paalanen did an excellent job in making this year’s tournament a success. About 75 participants from almost all the Nordic countries were present. Those not staying at a private home were accommodated at the Scandic Rosendahl Hotel with a magnificent view on the lake. The bus service between the hotel and the golf courses was speedy and comfortable.

The winner of the competition is Urmas Isok from Estonia with 145 net points strokeplay(+2) and two times 81 gross points, in strokeplay, totalling 162 points (+19) or 7 points ahead of the second gross. In June 2011 Urmas was chairman of the organizing committee of the European Championship in Tallinn (270 participants). This time he showed that he is also an excellent golfer and not only a first class organizer of big IGFR golf events.

The Nordic team competition was won by the “Team ITA-HELSINKI/WARKAUSM with Koponen Pentti, Hoponen Riitta and Makkonen Erkki, with a total of 188 stableford net points.

Throughout the week fellowship was cultivated and the quality of the golf courses was excellent.

The President of the RC Jussinkylä, Rot. Reima Wiskari invited us to their weekly breakfast at the Rosendahl Hotel.  To the big surprise of most participants this all-men’s club of 70 has not less then 40 golfers of good level. More about the IGFR memberships in a separate note.

Many thanks to Antero Virtanen, head of the organizing committee, to the President of the RC Jussinkylä, Rot. Reima Wiskari and to Antero Paalanen, for the perfect organisation of the 41st Rotary Nordic Golf.

Our friends in Finland are without doubt capable to host bigger IGFR events in the future.
