Gerry Kelly – International Golfing Fellowship of Rotary (IGFR) 2017.

Gerry walked us through the presentation that was made to the IGFR steering committee in Australia resulting in a successful bid to host the 54th World Championship IGFR golf tournament here in Victoria, August 6 – 12, 2017.

The presentation really showed the beauty of our region, referenced our top ten standing with Conde Nast and was peppered with beautiful images of our Harbour including the iconic Harbour Ferries.

The last time Victoria hosted the tournament was 1982 and Jim Warr remembers it well having hosted two couples, one from New Zealand, the other from Italy.  It is anticipated that we will have 20 – 25 countries represented for the event in 2017.

The week is much more than golf although golf is at the centre of the event, taking place at Bear Mountain.  As has been announced, the owners are going to retain both courses as full 18 hole golf courses.  In an act of generosity, Bear Mountain is going to return 12% of revenues to the tournament (booze not included) and hotel partner Hotel Grand Pacific is going to return 10% back to the tournament.

The week gets underway on Sunday August 6, 2017 with registration taking place at the Hotel Grand Pacific.  That evening there will be an opening ceremonies which conclude just prior to the start of Symphony Splash.  Golf starts on Monday and for non golfers there will be a host of activities.  Tuesday night will be a gala dinner themed as Canada night.  Wednesday is a non golf day so large gathering excursions are being contemplated.  Friday is the closing ceremonies and gala with guests leaving on Saturday.

It will cost an estimated $250,000 to stage the week’s events and will generate a profit of approx $25,000 and perhaps more as sponsors and additional partners are brought into the mix.  As it is a Rotary International event other clubs will be brought up to speed over the coming months and asked to assist in support, particularly volunteer recruitment is an essential part of the early stage planning.

The volunteer coordinator for the week is Reid James, GM of the Hotel Grand Pacific who can be reached via email, for those interested in volunteering.
