The rules and the number of participants have changed considerably since the first world championship was held in St.Andrews/Scotland. There were 47 entrants and 10 countries represented. in 1998 there were almost 500 Rotarians and guests with 474 golfers in Pinehurst from 28 countries. Some of the early rules were: - Lowest individual score for four rounds. Now it is three rounds. - after the first two rounds the field was reduced to 50 players or half the number of golfers who started initially - - The handicap was limited to 12, but any player could enter. Hcp.-Divisions were later introduced from 0-12, 13 - 18 and 19 up. There is now also a « partner’s Division. primarily for the accompanying ladies, but also for the men accompanying lady Rotarians and guests. At the board meeting in 1997 the board of Directors decided to incorporate the stableford system to determine winners of many different groups and the 1998 Pinehurst venue was the first occasion to use this scoring system. There are now many golf fellowship groups, the most active are presently in Europe, among them IGFR Austria, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. Oct. 2016/OJK
